Sarris Supermarkets Old PhotoIn 1954 Dimitris Sarris decided to start his own business in the village of Lefkoniko, in the district of Famagusta. The business was based on wholesale and retail trade; managed by Dimitris Sarris. He was helped by his daughters Vasoulla and Maro, along with their husbands Loizo Kalaintzi and Athanasio Athanasiou, respectively.

The business carried out a lot of trade between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and consistently imported goods. As a result the business expanded year by year, and Dimitris Sarris' business became well known in the surrounding region of Famagusta and further more.

With the Turkish invasion in 1974, Dimitris Sarris and his daughters' families became refugees, but in 1975 found the strength to open a small shop on Ermou Street in Larnaca, which was commonly known by the people as having “anything you could think of”.

Due to the business expanding, in 1981 the shop was moved to Leontiou Mahera and became a company with the commercial name “D.Sarris Ltd.”. The company consisted of four members, Athanasio and Maro Athanasiou, and Loizo and Vasoulla Kalaintzi who each owned 25% equity of the company.

In 1986, the company was moved to a new building exactly opposite the previous one. The old building has since been used as a storage facility for the supermarket's stock, and as their wholesale department.

In 1989, the company expanded and built a new, though smaller store in the main street of Laranca-Limassol. By 1994, the present building in Leontiou Mahera street expanded to include another floor. At the beginning of 2004, the store in the main street of Larnaca-Limassol was sold, and a few months later the company decided to rent another store in the village of Ormidia in the Larnaca region.

Since then, in 2006, the company decided to open another four new shops in the district of Nicosia.

Even today the company is still in the hands of the Athanasiou and Kalaintzi families. The purpose of the business, as it was decided when it was first created, is to provide an everyday service and close relationships between the owners, the staff, and the customers. Today the company has 110 staff across six supermarkets.
